Tanglewoods is the January 18, 2019 album and my third review for the Empty Pockets which features Josh Solomon, Erika Brett, Nate Bellon, and Danny Rosenthal on the MT Pockets Records label which features vocals of energetic pop-leaning country Americana, with careful and bright vocal harmonies on such songs on this ten-track album such as The Grind, Asleep On The Subway, Brand New Eyes, the title track Tanglewoods and so much more. Listening to this album, I hear the growth of this band as performers and as songwriters from the first album I reviewed to this current one. I was impressed with many facets of this band, their performance, their songwriting talents, the way this album was recorded and their marketing strategy by offering a free CD for the cost of shipping because once you hear one album, you will want to buy more from this band. In the upcoming weeks, I have one more release to review which is their Live In Seattle album. If you get an email for a free CD offer from this band, don’t turn it down, it will only cost you shipping and you will enjoy this band enough that you will want the other albums in their library. You will be able to learn more about this amazing band, their other music releases, and their current tour schedule by going to their official website http://theemptypockets.com/. In closing, I want to thank this great band for the opportunity to hear their music and support their work.
Heroes is the sixtieth studio album by American country music singer Willie Nelson, released by Legacy Recordings on May 15, 2012. This great album contains classic country songs, new songs written by Nelson and his son Lukas, and the classic song from Nelson’s repertoire, “A Horse Called Music“. Guest appearances include Lukas Nelson, Ray Price, Merle Haggard, Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Johnson, Billy Joe Shaver, and Sheryl Crow. This fourteen track album features such great songs as A Horse Called Music, Roll Me Up, the title track Heroes, Every Time He Drinks He Thinks Of Her and many others including the covers of Just Breathe (made famous by Pearl Jam), The Scientist (made famous by Coldplay) and Tom Waits single Come On Up To The House. Originally, the album was named after the track Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die but was then changed to Heroes after Nelson and his production team decided that the original name could deter conservative sale outlets. I was impressed with the songwriting on this album as well as its performance and recording. This album is still available on CD and digital download from Amazon, Apple Music, and all other music retailers.
It is not very often that I review a single song due to time restraints, but this evening I heard a song that I was so impressed with that I decided to make an exception. Most of the time, the younger generation of artists cover songs of the pioneers, but if it’s the other way around, it’s a different story. The song is Just Breathe, the October 31, 2009 song written by Eddie Vedder and was recorded by Pearl Jam on their ninth album Backspacer. The version I heard this evening was the cover performed by Willie Nelson and his son Lukas Nelson from the May 15, 2012 album Heroes on the Legacy Records label and later on the October 16, 2015 album The Essential Willie Nelson also on the Legacy Records label. I was moved by the performance of this song. Lukas sounds so much like his father it is amazing. Willie and Lukas gave this great song much justice with great vocals and harmonies. I have been a fan of Willie Nelson’s music for many years and now I want to hear more of Lukas’s work as a solo artist. This song is available as a digital download and on the two albums, I mentioned earlier from Amazon and many other music outlets.
Prove It On Me is the second album from Rory Block‘s new ”Power Women of the Blues” series scheduled for release on March 27, 2020, from the Stony Plain Records label. This recording celebrates the songs of nine ground-breaking female blues artists, includes one of her own originals. Prove It On Me presents Rory’s unique take on songs from phenomenal female performers and songwriters: Arizona Dranes, Elvie Thomas Merline Johnson, Madlyn Davis, Helen Humes, Rosetta Howard, Lottie Kimbrough, Gertrude ”Ma” Rainey and Memphis Minnie. This ten-track album has a great blues sound with a tang of country thrown in with the songs It’s Red Hot, the title track Prove It To Me, In My Girlish Days, Milk Man Blues and so much more. I am so moved by the performance on this album as well as the songwriting and the recording. All vocals on the new disc are by Rory Block, who also played all the guitar and bass parts on her Signature Model Martin Guitars. In addition, all drums and percussion heard on the new disc – guitar bongos, hat boxes, plastic storage tubs, oatmeal boxes, and wooden spoons – were played by Rory. Rory is an artist I would love to hear more from. This album is available on CD and digital download format from Amazon, Apple Store, and many other music retailers. Looking at her website https://www.roryblock.com, I noticed she will be playing at one of our local clubs in May and I am going to be there to listen to her live. On this website you can learn more about this artist, her music, and where she will be playing near you. In closing, I want to thank Dawn Loucks at Linus Entertainment for sending me this great CD.
Back in August of 2017, we saw an ad for a CD free for the cost of postage, so I ordered the CD Ten Cent Tour by the band The Empty Pockets. I was impressed with the sound of it that I decided to write a review on the album. Moving forward over two and a half years later, I received package in the mail today with two CDs, a nice t-shirt and the signed vinyl copy of the album Voices with a nice note that said “Thanks for such a nice review of our album Ten Cent Tour, It means a lot to us” signed The Empty Pockets. I also received a message from Josh Solomon thanking me for the 2017 review and that he and Erika Brett first saw the review a few days ago. I am glad they finally got the chance to read and like the review. Voices is the September 1, 2017 album by the Empty Pockets which features Josh Solomon, Erika Brett, Nate Bellon, and Danny Rosenthal on the MT Pockets Records label which features vocals of energetic pop-leaning country Americana, with careful and bright vocal harmonies on such songs on this ten-track album such as Voices In My Head, I Am Strong, The Bubble, Need To Know and so much more. It is not very often that I get the thrill of getting the CD and the Vinyl version of a release but yesterday in the mail I received the new album by Canadian born Singer-Songwriter Patsy Thompson called Fabulous Day. This release was twelve years in the making and is worth every minute of it. I had the privilege in December to review two of the tracks on this album I Think About You and Dreamin’ which after I hear both of them I knew I had to hear more from this great artist. Listening to this album, I fell in love with the song from start to finish on this ten-track about that is a nice mixture of country and rock with such tracks as the title track Fabulous Day, Neon Lights, Picking You Up, Someone To Blame and so much more. I was also impressed with her rendition of the Merle Haggard classic Misery And Gin. I was impressed with her amazing voice, a great instrumental backup, and her songwriting abilities as well as a superb recording and performance. I am looking forward to seeing her hit big on the major country record charts. After hearing this album, I must get hold of her earlier recording to see the growth of her as an artist. You can learn more about this artist and her music and more by going to her official website https://www.patsythompsonmusic.com where in addition to CD Baby and other music retailers you can get your own copy of this amazing album.
Crossing Bridges is the January 18, 2018 album by the Cumming, Georgia band The Dewberries consisting of Paula Jones and John Ragin whose sound is primarily acoustic; a mix of country, bluegrass, folk, and rockabilly…in a word, it is Americana. I first heard their music on an online radio show hosted by Lois High, afterwords, I knew had to hear more from this act with John Ragin on guitars, bass, mandolin, dobro, drums and vocals, Paula Jones on vocals and percussion, Kurt Baumer on fiddle and Mark Van Allen on dobro. This twelve track album features amazing vocals and harmonies, as well as a great backup on such tracks as She, Was Gone Like The Wind, A Sparrow Has To Fly, The Nights Grow Colder, Pickin’ Strings, Restless Wind and so much more. I was quite moved by their songwriting talent, their performance and how this album was recorded. Sex and Gasoline is the thirteenth studio album by American country music singer Rodney Crowell released September 2, 2008, on the Work Song/Yep Roc Records label. This eleven-track album of all original songs with a country/Americana feel showcases his amazing voice and songwriting style on such songs as the title track Sex and Gasoline, The Rise And Fall Of Intelligent Design, Funky And The Farm Boy, Closer To Heaven and so much more. I have been a fan of his work from back in the 80s and his voice is still as strong as ever. This album was well written, recorded and performed plus is available in CD and digital download from Amazon, Bandcamp and other outlets where music is sold.
